Since there are so many people trying to install Windows XP on machines that came with Vista and are having trouble because Windows XP won't detect their SATA drive, I wrote this guide to make life easier. I also thought if your going to slipstream mass storage drivers into Windows XP, it would be a great time to slipstream Service Pack 3 as well. You're not required to slipstream Service Pack 3 in order to slipstream the mass storage drivers, but if you do, you should slipstream Service Pack 3, before the mass storage drivers.
Required SoftwareDownload the following software below and install ImgBurn and IsoBuster.

If it?s not clearly labeled on your disc or you are unsure insert your Windows XP disc into your computer and explore the disc. Look for a file named, WIN51IP.SP2, if you don?t see it or just have WIN51IP or WIN51IP.SP1 then you need Service Pack 2.
Since by now most Windows XP discs already contain Service Pack 2, this guide will show you how to slipstream Service Pack 3. Don?t worry if your Windows XP disc does not contain Service Pack 2, it?s the exact same procedure as slipstreaming Service Pack 3 only you?re going to slipstream Service Pack 2 first, then Service Pack 3.
PART I - Slipstreaming Service Pack 3 Getting started 1. Make 2 folders on your c:\ drive. Name them
wxp and
sp3. Don?t make them on the desktop!
2. By now you should have downloaded all required software. Rename
WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to
sp3.exe and move it into the sp3 folder.
3. Copy all the files and folders on the Windows XP disc to the
wxp folder.
4. While your Windows XP disc is in the drive right down the volume name.
5. Now you have to extract the boot image from your Windows XP disc, see below.
Extracting boot image 1. Install IsoBuster and start it up, when it asks, click on free function only.
2. In the left hand box left-click on
Bootable Disc.
3. In the right hand box right-click on
Microsoft Corporation.img and select
Extract Microsoft Corporation.img. Save the file in your
wxp folder.
Slipstreaming 1. Click on the start button, select run, then type
cmd and press enter. A black box with a command line should pop up.
2. Change the directory to the sp3 folder by typing
cd c:\sp3 and press enter. You should now see
C:\sp3> 3. Now type
sp3.exe -x and press enter to extract service pack to the sp3 folder.
4. To slipstream Service Pack 3 into Windows XP type
c:\sp3\i386\update\update.exe -s:c:\wxp and press enter. When done a confirmation message will pop up that says Integrated install has completed successfully.
Note: At this point Service Pack 3 is now integrated into the Windows XP files located in the wxp folder. You could burn the files to a CD or DVD and have a Windows XP disc that would install Windows XP with Service Pack 3. If this is all that you want skip down to
Burning to disc. Otherwise continue to
Part II.
Part II - Slipstreaming Mass Storage Drivers Note: Only download and slipstream the Mass Storage drivers. This will ensure that the installation remains stable. Adding all the other driver packs could cause you headaches later on. All the rest of the drivers can and should be installed manually.
Getting started 1. Make a folder on your c:\ drive. Name it
dp.
2. Double click on the file
DPs_BASE_805.exe that you should have downloaded earlier. When the extract to box pops up, type
c:\dp and click
Extract.
3. Move the file
DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32_805.7z to the
c:\dp\DriverPacks folder. Do not extract it.
4. In the
dp folder find
DPs_BASE.exe and double click it start the program.
Integrating the drivers 1. In the left hand box expand
Settings and select
Location.
2. On the right hand side, make sure
disc is selected under
Installation platform, then click the
browse button. Find your
wxp folder and click the
OK button.
3. In the left hand box re-expand
Settings and select
DriverPacks.
4. On the right hand side check off
DriverPack MassStorage 8.05 &
DriverPack MassStorage text mode. 5. In the left hand box select
DriverPacks method, and on the right hand side select
method 1.
6. In the left hand box expand
Optional settings and select
KTD. On the right side select
Enable KTD for ALL slipstreamed DriverPacks.
7. Down at the bottom press the
Slipstream! button. When done a box will pop up saying
Slipstream finished in XX seconds. Now it?s time to burn to disc.
Burning to disc 1. Start up ImgBurn. When started you will be presented with a menu. Select
Write files/folders to disc.
2. On the left hand side, in the box under
Source type
c:\wxp and click the
+ icon. Below that you?ll need to select your CD/DVD burner under
Destination.
3. On the right hand side there is five tabs. Select the
Device tab and set your write speed at the bottom.
4. On the
Options tab:
a. In the
File System drop down menu select
ISO9660 + Joliet.
b. Under that check off
Recurse Subdirectories,
Include Hidden Files, and
Include System Files. Leave the other boxes unchecked.
5. On the
Labels tab type in the original volume label from your Windows XP disc, in the
ISO9660 &
Joliet boxes.
6. Under the
Advanced tab there are 3 sub tabs,
Dates,
Restrictions, and
Bootable Disc. On the
Dates tab just leave it set to
Use File Date & Time.
7. Then under the
Restrictions tab there are 3 more sub tabs.
ISO9660,
Joliet, and
UDF.
1. On the
ISO9660 tab:
a. Under
Folder/File Name Length, select
Level X - 219 Characters.
b. Under
Character Set, select
DOS and check off the four boxes below that.
2. On the
Joliet tab:
a. Under
Folder/File Name Length, select
Level X - 110 Characters.
b. Check off
Allow Files Without Extensions and leave
Add ?,1? Version Number To Files unchecked.
8. Go back to the
Bootable Disc tab:
a. Under
Options, check off
Make Image Bootable.
b. In the
Emulation Type drop down menu select
None (Custom).
c. In the
Boot Image: box type
c:\wxp\Microsoft Corporation.img.
d. Change
Sectors To Load from
1 to
4.
9. Finally start burning the disc by clicking on the picture of a folder with an arrow pointing to a disc, on the bottom left hand side.
