Free antivirus for Vista ?
« on: May 03, 2008, 12:38:14 PM »
??? Not real familiar with Vista, my neighbor 70 years old just bought new laptop with Vista and is worried about virus attack and she thinks I know everything about computers. I have dealt with WIN XP for years and am familiar with a couple free AV progs, but would like some input from folks more familiar with Vista.
Thanks

http://antivirus.comodo.com/ --- I have been told this works with Vista
although I have not tried it... I have used the other 2 mentioned with Vista.

For freebies go for AVG Antivirus. http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Then get Spyware Doctor for antispyware. You can get a free version from google pack. http://pack.google.com You'll just have to manually run scans with it. Antispyware protection is probably more needed these days than antivirus protecttion.

Thanks for the quick responses. I'll check AVG again and see what I can find out about working with Vista. Last time I looked I thought all they had available for Vista was a paid program, but I'll check a little more closely this time. I've gotten spybot for her and will be trying to show her how to use it safely.
Thanks again

If she's running 32 bit Vista, you can use Sandboxie free version.

http://www.sandboxie.com/

Install has an option to put a button on the QuickLaunch bar to
run the default browser sandboxed.  Browsing is the most likely
place to pick up viruses.  Although you can run email and other
programs sandboxed if you want to.

What I like about Sandboxie, is that it doesn't slow your whole
system down just to try to filter everything.
It uses a device driver for the HD.  Any program running sandboxed
that thinks it's writing to the HD is really writing inside the sandbox
folder.  The free version does all you need.  I paid the $25 just because
I like the approach at it wasn't exorbitant.  Might be up to $30 or so
now.

Plus for power users you can set the Sandboxie service to run manually
to allow starting and stopping when needed instead of it running all
the time in the background like virus shields do.

I use the free virus and adware scanners occasionally just to make
sure nothing got through.

AVG 8 is free and works with vista as i use it. It has both virus and malware check. Avira is also good and in my opinion faster.
