Backing up Services vs. WMI backup ???
« on: April 18, 2008, 05:51:34 AM »
Greetings folks

This is my very first post on this forum!

After many, many years of being a devout Win98se fan (and I still am!), I eventually realised that there are less and less products and software (e.g. anti-virals, firewalls etc) that are catering for Win98, so very recently I forced myself to install WinXP Pro (kicking and screaming all the way!)

Basically, an utterly confusing experience after knowing Win98 so well.  Thus it was a god-send to find Black Viper's website and this forum.

In a word - fantasic!  At last, information and "how to's ... " that are written in good English and even an XP dumbo like me can understand.

I have now tweaked all the Services advised by Black Viper, and have downloaded the four registry files.  I've also had a good look at his brilliantly-conceived tool for creating your own .reg file.  Again ... fantastic!

Now, my question ....

Looking at the services/management applet (is that the right name for it?) I cannot see any way to make a backup of the services itself.  However, one can make a backup of the WMI (whatever that is!)

I did make a backup of that out of curiosity and the file size was around 5.95 mb.

Now, does this WMI backup contain the services settings ???  If not, what does it contain, and of what practical use is it?

Thank you folk.  I hope you don't mind a newbie with his first post asking these questions.

Take good care and go well ...

Dr. Mac

Welcome Dr. Mac, you came to the right place and while I do not have the immediate answer you need did you try looking in the actual sight of BV's? I think he has a thread on this very thing, I will look for you but have to sneak back to work, I am pretty sure there is a section on this though...

again, glad to see you made the jump, I use XP Pro and am pretty pleased with it for several years now and with this site, well, it makes it that much more fun!!

Keep checking back, look in his tweaking site and someone will help ya soon...

I am understanding that you want to make a backup of the services configuration. The easiest way to start would be by going to Start-->Run then type regedit. Once the registry is open navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-->SYSTEM-->CurrentControlSet then right click on the Services folder and select export. This will export the services configuration directly from the registry. You will want to edit the file to remove non windows services so if you ever need to merge the file it wont mess anything up.

Also you can make the file from BV's Custom Registry tool which may actually be easier. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/customREG.htm

Backing up service settings (the registry settings) is done by this article:

Greetings again!

Thanks for the replies folks - much appreciated.

I'd still like to know what that WMI thingie is and when you make a backup of that (which you can do easily) what does it contain?

Cheers again for your replies.

Take care and go well ...

Dr. Mac
