Has anyone taken SP1 for Vista yet?
« on: March 18, 2008, 03:17:00 PM »
It's listed in my Vista updates.
I'm just wondering if anyone had problems.
Thanks.

Installed SP1 yesterday on my Vista laptop and am pleased with the faster boot-ups and overall speed seems to have improved.  No problems with the auto download and re-boot, all went perfect.

Running great for me.  Not as much of a noticeable difference as I was expecting, though.

I tried it yesterday after making an image backup, It failed on my computer and restored the system to it's
prior state.  Which is good.  For some reason the install took almost an hour before it failed and restored the system
fine.

I have a toshiba laptop, 2gigs ram intgel centrino dual and nvidia 256meg video and plenty of hard disks space.
I turned of my avg anti-virus and my sunbelt counterspy before I tried to execute the update.

I will try to figure out what is going on..  I do have all the updates installed properly on Vista Ultimate..

My laptop (built for XP, though) has an issue after installation of SP1 (happened during beta also) that it takes a very long time to boot. To get around it, I try to hibernate instead, but it still is very annoying.
Details of the issue:
To see what Vista is doing during its boot process, you can go into msconfig, boot tab, and check "No GUI boot." No, it does not stop Windows from loading, it removes the "loading screens" with progress bars.
Anyway, while the laptop is booting and the initial drivers are loading, it redraws the screen one line at a time... very... very slowly.
Vista retail did not have the issue.

You crack me up BV.  Instead of solving the issue you use hibernate.  Actually, it's something I'd do on my home computer. LOL.  Prolly don't have the time or care to try and fix it.  Been there, done that.

Well, I am also using ReadyBoot with a 4GB flash on the laptop and if I reboot, Vista has to rebuild all of it again, so hibernate solves more then one issue. :P

Installed SP1 yesterday. Downloaded 470MB file. Took 30min and one reboot (some people taking 1 hr). Was completely up-to-date prior. Only one issue so far - desktop icons were screwed - had a small box overlayed on the bottom lhs. Think it was the "arrow" messed up as it was evident whenver I created a new icon.

Tried purging the icon cache but no good. Eventually ran Tuneup Utilities 2008 and selected the "repair icon" wizard. That fixed it. Arrows were restored and then I chose to hide them. No noticeable performance increase. Have had some stability issues so will be interesting to compare.

I guess 2 out of 3 is not bad.  Both of my Vista Business tower computers successfully completed the install
of SP1 for Vista but I still can't figure out why my laptop keeps bombing when I try to install sp1.

Will keep trying...
