disabling the windows defender service will make a nasty-looking error message pop up every time windows starts up.  to avoid that, make sure the windows defender service is running, then go into windows defender (it?s in the start menu directly under programs).  click tools in the toolbar, then options.  scroll all the way down to the bottom of the options page for administrator options, then uncheck ?use windows defender.?  save and confirm, then the service can be disabled without the error message.

Anytime you disable a Windows security feature such as Windows Firewall or Windows Defender, you must also disable Security Center to avoid the nag screens on startup.

And I believe that all this info pertains to XP in addition to Vista.

Cheers and regards.
