wanted or unwanted background download
« on: July 08, 2008, 11:58:49 AM »
I had a problem with background download even when no application was on. this goes on continously till i turned BITS to manual and windows update off. Now when i started BITS the download started and when i checked with netstat at command, the IP address it gave was for Akamai Technologies Inc, Australia. WHo are they and how can i block them ?? when i googled it I found them to be on the level (kind off) but what do they want with my PC??? ANy light on this mystery entity??

Akamai Technologies provides a proprietary service to many large Internet based companies and is perfectly legitimate. The DNS service directs you to Akamai, and Akamai in turn redirects your request to the nearest (not necessarily geographically) server for that function. It is a proven way to combat SYN flood attacks and to split up large services into a number of different locations. From your brief description, I would say that it sounds like an SP1 download which is quite large. Set BITS to automatic and Windows Update to manual. You might also want to change your update settings to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". That way you are in the drivers seat. Then click on Windows Update and let it do its job.

thanks for the insight, was wondering on similar lines, just for the knowledge when u say sp1 is large, just how large we talking about? and considering i have terminated the download many times. would the download resume from last interruption or start from the begning? and why didnt it say so in the first place, instead of scaring me like that!

Microsoft's download site lists SP1 as 434.5 MB, which should take about 1 hour 18 min on 768K cable or DSL. Through Wndows Update it may be less. If you initiate the update, it should tell you what it is doing and how long it is expected to take. I just know that it took a long time when I did it, and other members may be able to tell you more. Again, I am just guessing based on the limited amount of information you supplied.

434mb for the 5 language version. 316mb for the English language only 32bit version.
