Post Pics of Rig
« on: March 06, 2008, 06:32:59 AM »
One thing I have found that every techie/geek likes to do is post pictures or his/her rig/setup so they have something to brag about. Is there a possibility of a section/forum for this in the future?

Have a great day

That would be fun, but I think some initial ground rules would be needed.  Something along the lines of only 1 picture can be posted and it needs to be a certain size.
We can't have postings that take forever to load.  Even with broadband topics with many pictures would take time to completely load.  I see this happen with the Maximum PC site that has a topic like this.
And I know if BV were interested he would have further stipulations I'm sure.

I would prefer that this site not turn into a place for people to brag about their computer equipment, so, no it is not possible.

You'd love to see me brag about my system, BV:
Plain white case that looks older than the 7 years that it is.
Old keyboard and CRT (but a flat CRT).....heavy thing.
Broken face plate on my dvd writer.

mine's a mess.  LOL.  But it runs pretty fast for the parts I've got.

No, but.....it's got a serious squeal to it.  I think it might be a fan.  I'll run her til she quits and have an excuse to build another :P

As I may have mentioned in previous posts, I actually had one catch fire.  Ran the PSU too hard for too long.  Ended up feeding 110V to the board.  Luckily the case was open and I was playing my brother some quake 3, so we caught it quick.   He said "Hey, your computer is on fire!"

Now that's a priceless computer moment.   Who knows, maybe this time it'll explode!  :)

You know what's funny?  Look at the ads above....they tailor them to the subject usually.  LOL.  I got a bunch of "Heavy Truck" sales ads.  hehe.

I understand exactly was BV means about these kinds of threads. I just wish there was a way to appease both sides. There are legitimate reasons for people posting pics of their "Rigs". Creative ideas and working personal prototypes. Self made mods that werent purchased somewhere. For instance like the cooling system I made out of some cardboard and a quiet fan. Isolates processor heat fromt the rest of the comp providing great airflow. Topped off with some Air filters to keep out the dust. I havent cleaned my system internally since it was built. It just doesnt need it. The case is an old Gateway case with a Mobo and processor from a Sony Vaio. Now if I were to post pics. It wouldnt be of some "Rig" with tons of neons and LED's . No windows showing internals with designer fans. No Mine would be showing raw ideas built constructively. Im sure BV wouldnt have a problem with that as long as it was a tutorial on how to accomplish the same thing. I dunno BV what do you think? Would there be a problem posting pics of specific mods we did? Things that werent bought and bolted on but were actually crafted by us ourselves.

There are two types of rig geeks.  Geeks with cool cases, glowing lights, and water cooling zip tied perfection.  And guys like me and some of the other folks here.  Old case with no lid for easy access so you can blow off the  CPU fan once in a while, no screws in the drives, wires hanging about.  Btw, this is my first post on BV, so I'm kinda scared.  I'll probably have to go lie down.  BV site was down for a long time, I thought it was gone forever.  Bummed I was, the internet wasn't the same without BV, which I originally found in MaximumPC.  Sorry if I violated the forum posting protocol, I don't wish to get banned.  Now I am gonna finish tweaking my sloppy Vista box.

Been awhile, but I've been lurking.  I thought I'd update my rig.  My 550 tru power supply just died...or at least part of it.  The 4 pin connector to the CPU is now brown.  I'm hoping it hasn't affected my mobo or other cpu :(
Guess I might run my puters a bit hard.  I'm "borrowing" a part from work for a few days, but no gaming on this 305W Dell PSU.  :P

I was sort of in the middle.

I tried the super-cool clean-case cable-where-they-should-be-action and failed bad at it. The first one that I did, I put plastic tubing around all the power supply cables (the black ribbed kind that usually is used for auto applications). Spent WAY too much time putting it all together (2 days), routing the cables nice. Ensuring all screws were good to go. It was rockin' (for me, at least). I fired up the system and left it on overnight running SETI @ Home. When I got up the next day, the system was off. Hm, I said to myself... "Hey Self, that is bad." Tried turning the system back on, no go. Thought maybe the power save features were on... well, could not find that out as it would not come back up. Ripped out the power supply (with all my pretty cabling) and put in a different one to test... it booted. Then went to the store to swap it out and came home, threw it in the case and let the cables lie where ever they may. Mainly to see if it would stay on for 24 hours. Well, the system actually spent the better part of 2 years on. LOL :)
It was my last "case modding" I ever did. :) Now, I have blue LED fans and a clear window in the side (the case came that way). Sigh. :) That is as "custom" as I get, I guess.

I would have zero problems with having a motherboard sitting on a table completely open air... however, my kitties find those little fans spinning around "very interesting" so I cannot do that. :P Last thing I need is a wet nose sniffing 5 volts... course, they would only do it once, and that is ignoring the fact they are walking static bombs. :)
