Services settings are being changed
« on: October 02, 2007, 01:06:32 PM »
I have a question concerning changes made to my Services settings made by unknown sources.

Changes seem to be from internal and external sources, legitimate (examples: when I change options through Control Panel, Microsoft Automatic Update, My Computer > Properties, etc) and/or illegitimate (malware).

If the sources are only illegitimate, then it is up to me to protect myself.

On the other hand, if Microsoft Auto Update is making certain changes such as Server, SSDP Discovery Services, System Restore Service, etc then should I disable the Automatic Update and download updates manually?

I am weary of resetting certain services almost daily without knowing the source.

Could you answer my question which is, does Microsoft alter Service settings to perform automatic updates?

If not, is there a way to protect my settings other than logging in without admin privileges?

Additionally, I appreciate your suggestions concerning Service settings. Your website is extremely valuable to me and I visit often to keep current on your findings and advice.

I am not aware of MS altering service settings before checking automatic updates... but after as some updates may modify or enable a particular service. For example, if you download a security update for UPnP service, after the reboot, it may place into automatic UPnP and SSDP Discovery, but it should not do that "every" time.
Check your event log. It should state in there when these services are coming back on and maybe "what" is requesting that.
