Still an application for windows XP?
« on: February 05, 2010, 02:42:08 AM »
Hi all. Do yall think that there is still, an application for windows XP? I do, but I would like to hear your take on why I do. Also, I would like to hear your reasons if you have any that are different.

1. It can still be useful for lightweight machines. If you have a machine that is a little weak, then XP can be useful. Netbooks come to mind. The mmall RAM requirements are nice.  Especially if you know the machine is not really going to be gamed on. If you know your user/s, then XP is almost perfect for this. Just be sure to run a good antivirus, such as avira. Just my humble opinion on that one. There are so many nice little themes out for XP, that you can make it look pretty, and not so dated. One of my particular favorites is the Zune theme put out by microsoft. It's quite complete, and turns everything black. I really do wish microsoft would start doing that again.

2. DX9 gaming. What's the point in gaming in vista or 7, if your game was developed for DX9? There are some that say it's possible that windows 7 could help out the looks of a dx9 game, but I find that a little unlikely. If so, it's probly one or two obscure games. If you play your dx9 games in XP, you get can set the services so low that you are barley using any resources at all. Which will of course shoot your minimum framrate sky high over what it would have been in vista.

3. They are still supporting XP till 2011. I heard this somewhere, think it may have been PC magazine. Can't remember now, but it seems at least somewhat likely. My only question is, what support are they referring to? I mean, are there really any bugs left, at this point? lol I really would like to know what all they will be adding to XP between now and the time they fully stop supporting it.

Did I leave anything out? Also, are there any reasons (other than gaming) that you can think of, that might be a disadvantage to installing XP on a machine for someone? Other than gaming of course. We all know it won't run DX10/11. Vista/7 are more up with the times, but for someone who is just going to be browsing the web, sending and receiving emails, doing college homework, or perhaps using it for a small business, I think it's a great option.

As long as it works well for you, I see no reason to upgrade on older hardware until support (critical updates) for the OS is retired by MS. At this point, extended support for XP SP3 ends in 2014 I believe (depends on what page you read on MS's site and how the time is calculated).
Support for XP SP2 will expire 13JUL2010.

Also, on older hardware, sometimes what OS a person chooses is dependent on what drivers are available for said hardware.

Thats a good point. But I find that the average joe user just wants to check his email and browse the web, in which case older hardware is usually perfectly fine. Mostly older people though. I guess the younger crowd might be wanting to do some other stuff, in which case they might be better of with vista/7.
