Problems Pinning To The Taskbar ?
« on: January 22, 2010, 05:45:14 PM »
I may be missing something simple but when I drag a desktop icon to the takbar the only option I have to pin it is to pin it to Internet Explorer ? When I drag it down anywhere else to an empty spot on the taskbar there is no pin option & it has a red circle with a line though it ? If I right click on the icon on the desktop there is no pin to taskbar option ?

What is the icon a shortcut for?  Is it for a folder or an executable?  Make sure the the "store and display recent items and programs" items are checked in the taskbar properties. Have you removed the shortcut arrow from the icon?  That too, can cause this problem if you didn't do it properly.

What I was hoping to do was make a folder like I have always done before. Put what I wanted in it & name it ( computer tools ) etc. & put it somewhere my documents etc. Then make a desktop short cut to it & put it on the task bar. I usually make 3 folders one for software 1 for websites & one for computer tools & put on the taskbar. That way I don't have all the clutter but have everything I use . So that's what I am trying but it ain't working LOL! It will let me pin an item in the folder but NOT the folder ?

You can pin a folder.  Do you have the options in task bar properties ticked like I asked?   If so, you should be able to.  Also, you didn't answer whether you removed the shortcut arrows? That will cause problems as well if not done correctly.

As long as those options are checked, folders, files, etc pin just fine to the task bar.  However, if you remove the arrow from a desktop shortcut improperly, it will has been know to cause the item not to pin.  So, after checking those things out, get back to us, DRSLETMEDOWN.

That's a pretty reputable site (I use quite often), so I don't think that would be an issue.  Just to make sure though, why don't you refresh the icon cache, reboot, and then try to pin your file.

;D
refresh the icon cache
Exactly how do you do that LOL! Sorry ! Does it matter where the folder is ? Location wise ? My documents, on the desktop etc ? Should you be able & have the option to pin any folder from anywhere ? One thing I could not pin from anywhere was the icon for a really cool looking aquarium screen saver. I like because you don't have to default it you can just click to turn it on & move the mouse to turn it off. What started this whole thing is I don't like desktop icons & like a clean desktop. At first I could pin but eveidently you can only put so many icons on the task bar ? So then I thought I would just make folders & put what I wanted in them & pin them to the tasbar & that's when this all began. Thanks for your & everyone elses help. This really is a GREAT place with knowledgeable people. Hopefully I'll have something to share some day LOL!

Downloaded & ran it but it made no difference. I have tried everything I know to simply make a folder & put what I want in it & get it to pin to the taskbar. I can't even get it to work from the desktop. A folder just won't pin ?

You shouldn't have to do all of that.  I can pin a folder by just dragging it to the taskbar.  I would try to figure out why you can't instead of doing all of that.  Either way, I am glad you are pleased.  8)

I agree ? I wish I knew how to make it simple to do ?
I just can't make it work any other way ?
If I make a folder shortcut to the desktop or try to pin it from it's location either way there is no pin option & if I drag it down it won't pin & has a red X ? If anyone else has had this happen & found the REAL fix I'd like to know.
