How to rebuild XP Pro when MS says No
« on: November 19, 2009, 07:39:35 PM »
My OS is full, tired & slow - definately time for a rebuild. I've prepared - backup of drivers done, data all backed up ... . Then I put the disk into the drive - but message from Microsoft is: "Later system already installed." (It's not of course, just has updates) So I can't install afresh as when I turn on with disk in place it still boots from HD and not from disk.
Everyone has to rebuild regularly so I'm sure there's answers to my problem already so:

sorry to start a new thread if this is already dealt with but the Q is:

You will need to check your motherboard or computer manual to discover how to enter the BIOS configuration screen and change the boot priority to look at the CD/DVD first. I also have to assume that by backing up your data that you did so with removeable media.

B/up done to second (slave) hard-drive.
Playing with BIOS sounds dangerous - I look at the P4 Titan Motherboard pages on BIOS setup & it makes as much sense to me as Chinese would.

Note: even when I enter OS disk and have it come up onscreen MS still insists a later version exists so will not let me proceed.

While I wait to find a way to learn about BIOS I followed the instructions given by Vampire Muffin Man http://bbs.blackviper.com/index.php/topic,2151.0.html .
Of course such a general clean-up is always a good thing as is disk check. Unfortunately my common programs (OE, Firefox Browser) are still very slow to open and respond.
Thus a reinstall is unavoidable. Where could I go to learn about what I have to do to BIOS in order to bypass MS blocking the reinstallation?

The quote about the 'later system' error message is correct. It means you have possibly upgraded to XP SP3 and the CD you're using is an XP, XP w/SP1 or XP w/SP2 CD and they will not 'install' or 'repair' a newer version of XP. You can either re-format the existing hard drive and install 'new' from the CD or you can slipstream the SP3 download with the XP CD you have, create an ISO file from which you burn a new XP W/sp3 CD which you can then use to 'repair' the existing installation.

Thank you all for resonding to my re-install questions; your knowledge and willingness to share are appreciated.  :)
I have followed advice, found instructions pertaining to my motherboard and (theoretically) now know how to change boot sequence.
