HomeGroup Confusion (Tweaked Settings)
« on: November 19, 2009, 05:56:06 PM »
I'm curious about something listed in the Tweak Settings. HomeGroup Listener and HomeGroup Provider are both left to their default setting. However, the services listed below are included and all recommended to be disabled. HomeGroup relies on the Function Discovery services and the Peer and PRNP services all have descriptions which note disabling these can affect HomeGroup functionality. Why were both HomeGroup services not mentioned in the Tweaked Settings?

HomeGroup Dependencies
Function Discovery Provider Host
Function Disocvery Resource Publication

Disabling Can Affect HomeGroup Functionality
Peer Name Resolution Protocol
Peer Networking Grouping
Peer Networking Identity Manager
PNRP Machine Name Publication Service

Agreed, but I had HomeGroup left on default for tweaked settings until further testing is done on my end to ensure that normal operations (for example, file and print sharing) are still functional.

I forgot how new Win7 is  ;D. I just wanted to add that last night I attempted to get HomeGroup up and running. I tried to enable those services one at a time and in the end I had to enable all of them and Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper just to join a HomeGroup. In HomeGroups defense all of the services listed above, plus both HomeGroup services and LTDM,  took around 9 to 12MB of RAM collectively. Not to shabby for such a large group  :).

any update on these BV?

Looking to kill everything related to homegroup myself, I dont run anything that the services are for.
Which I thought were mostly the WIN7 to WIN7 "special" sharing features for video, music, etc.

Anyways, I did disable to test it on my laptop running win7 64bit, and I get errors in the event log.
Not sure if all or some are just win7 crap errors, like the WMI errors.
As I dont fiddle with it much, be nice to know what you've learned.
