Facebook App. causing PC to slow down, anyone have same issue?
« on: November 10, 2009, 03:34:17 AM »
I know my topic is really lame but it says on rules be precise.

So here goes,

This is the second time it happened to my computer, I love playing farm-town on facebook, it used to just make my firefox crash so I stopped because it went really slow I ended up thinking I got a virus, took my computer apart then put thermal paste because my processor over heated.

Yesterday, I played again which is so stupid of me, while I was playing my computer freeze so I had to restart. When I did my computer got terribly slow even my music sound like its being back-masked.

So I download registry cleaner, scan for spyware (nothing was detected), then did virus scan (which btw took 9 hours!!!!)  So I ended up reformatting my drive and creating six partitions.

I don't know whats causing my PC to act that way.

OS: Windows XP SP2 (installed on SATA)
MB: ASUS P5V800-MX
RAM: 1GB
Browser: FireFox
HD: 160GB Sata  and 80GB IDE
Vid: OnBoard
Processor: P4 2.6Ghz

Why did u create 6 partitions? The slowness after the freeze could have been DMA being set to PIO mode. Have you had much experience apply thermal paste? Look here for proper instructions --> http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/as5/ins_as5_singlecore_wcap.pdf. Have you ran any testing software to see if there is an issue with your hardware?

I applied the thermal paste like months ago the first time it crashed after flash games and yes my CPU was around 70 deg in temperature, I asked someone to apply the thermal paste coz I didn't know how. Turns out when I tried cleaning my fan I was not able to put it back properly.

About the 6 drives, I just changed it to three. I got 50Gig for OS, 100GB for programs and my 80Gig IDE is for storing files. I've been reading some of the threads about backing up files so I think I will be stacking re-writable CDs and DVDs.

I hope it works this time. I don't even know if I am doing the right thing. lol

Oh and refrain from downloading files I dont really need I certainly need to jot this down.

I dont know what memory leak means but I read somewhere that playing flash games in facebook causes that and I dont know how to avoid it

I'm not sure this is your issue, but those games and applications on Facebook cause all kinds of problems...I never play them, and I always ignore application requests etc that are sent to me.  There are all forms of nasties floating around there.

You could possibly just have some hardware issues as both you and IH8U have stated, but I wouldn't rule Facebook out either.

Facebook is always slow, slow, slow and you constantly have to refresh the page. As
Spawn said "those games and applications on Facebook..."

The only way to avoid it is to not play the games. If you like to play them though you'll just have to put up with any issues they may cause.
