freeing up disk space
« on: October 31, 2009, 11:52:48 AM »
I keep getting this error message:

Warning Event Notification

Disk free space has dropped below the minimum threshold. Free up space on your hard disk drive by:
1. Backing up your data to a tape backup, ZIP or network drive.
2. Delete unused files.

If you are unsure which files are safe to move or delete, contact your Help Desk or consult your software manuals.

What does it mean and what should I do to repair it?

I've done the regedit thing, and also have messed around with the settings in the administrator options regarding reading drive, also disabled/enabled S.M.A.R.T within the BIOS and am still receiving the error. Does this mean that my IDE HD is on it's way of going out?

ANY HELP PLEASE!!!  :-\

Thanks!

Burn all of your photos, documents, and music to disk.  Delete temporary files.  Uninstall programs that you don't use.  How big is your hard drive and how much space is remaining?

Also.....delete all but the most recent restore point IF your machine is running well otherwise.

S.M.A.R.T. is only a health check. It does not make more space (or use any for that matter).
Run a disk cleanup from:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup

Anything less than 5gb free on your primary hard disk is in the danger zone though I suspect every tech might have their own opinion on that one ;D.  The more the merrier.  I suspect that between Just Rachel and BV you've found all sorts of free space again.

5 MB is about what I have experienced, depending on the operating system and how you use it. Newer operating systems generally require more, but can be compensated for with more memory. Any less than that causes the hard disk to do a lot of thrashing.

Edit Note: I originally confused GB with MB. Must be my Alzheimer's kicking in.
