Custom Registry tool

Hiya...thought I would be brave and go for your 'Custom Registry Tool' as I am so feed up with all the unecessary services running.

I am first going to make a backup of my registry by going into regedit and exporting all files to save as a backup then apply yours. If I decide I want to go back to how it was I take it all I will have to do is to open my backup file then merge again. Please confirm this is correct.

Many services cannot be changed via a registry file. The custom tool does not change any that would be an issue, but "exporting" the entire services tree and then attempting to merge again may fail.
You can download the default values (or create a file by hitting submit without changing anything) and merge your new registry settings. Even better, duplicate your current settings via the custom tool for services that can be changed by it and there is your backup.
Reboot after each merge.

hmmm...duplicating everything first is a bit of a pain lol...was hoping I could just save my registry as it is then restore if needed. If I decide to do this does it really make a difference? Thanks for your help

Follow these steps.

1. Go here http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/registry.htm and download the default registry values for you version of Vista.

OR

1. Go here http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/customREG.htm and select your version of Vista.
2. Do not change anything on the Custom Services Registry File Tool and scroll all the way to the bottom and select Create File.
3. Copy everything in the box starting with:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
; Custom File Created at www.blackviper.com
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AeLookupSvc]
"Start"=dword:00000002

4. Open notepad and paste it in there. Now save as default_svc.reg

Ok thanks. As I am a bit nervous mucking about with the registry want to make sure I am doing everything correctly.

When I have saved it as ?default svg.reg? do I then merge? Also why do I have to include ?custom file created at www.blackviper.com?? Thanks.

You do not merge the default values unless you change something. The default values are your "backup" if you so desire.
In registry files, lines starting with a ";" are comments. That comment is included in the custom tool to remind users of where the file was created. If you do not wish to have that line in your file, it can be deleted, but keep everything else, including the first line, intact.

Also, if you do not feel comfortable using the registry, note which services you change, one at a time however you desire to do that, and use the built in Windows tool. Instructions are included here:

Having a senior moment or 3 ... thought that your Custom Registry tool was already tweaked so now understand what was meant by not changing anything then create file to have as a backup. I was hoping you had already done it for me ...oh well spose I will have to go through it all  ...Thanks again
