Is it worth a try?
« on: October 16, 2009, 08:55:55 AM »
Greets,
I've been through desktops since 1985, DOS 2.0, dual floppy IBM PC, etc., Win3.0 through XPsp2. Never laid a finger on Vista. Been laptop-only for last five years or so, with several on a LAN.

Thanks to BV, I really dug into XP services years ago and tweak it to maximum barebones performance, which is the way I run things. No gloss, no bells, no whistles, classic mode, as lean as possible.

My main system is
Toshiba SATELLITE P300-1G5 C2D/T6400
Processor clock speed 2000 MHz
Processor front side bus 800 MHz
Mobile Intel? GM45 Express Chipset L2 cache 2 MB
Serial ATA 2 5.400 rpm 320 GB HDD
17.0 Display 500:1 1.440 x 900
4096 MB RAM (8192 MB max)type DDR2 RAM (800 MHz)
Video ATI Mobility Radeon? HD 3470 HyperMemory 256 MB dedicated VRAM
Optical drive DVD Super Multi SATA CD/DVD drive buffer size 2 MB
Audio system Conexant CX20561 Harman Kardon? stereo speakers
Wireless 802.11a/g/Draft-N
Fast Ethernet LAN
international V.90 modem (V.92 ready)

Works great with XPSP2 after getting around the AHCI/SATA hoops. Came with 3GB of RAM and I should've known there was a reason, because I stuck 4GB and found out sp2 will only see 3GB. Still plenty of RAM.

Question is, will W7 get higher performance from this machine. And if so, am I going to pull my hairs for weeks getting rid of junk, disabling services, turning off stupid security warnings for exes, aero interfaces, etc., etc., etc..???

I don't care about new features. Alls I'm interested in is SUPERIOR, measurable performance, those typical in a benchmarking software. In other words, will W7 make better use of the hardware above than XP? Or will I be in for headaches?

All my apps are 32 and 16 bit legacy. No plans/need for 64bit for the foreseeable future. Use is internet, text and basic number crunching, moving gig-sized files from internal and external drives, nothing really intensive.

Thanks!
G

I would stick with what you have. If you are going to minimize the "newness" of W7 anyway, nor care about a new GUI look, keep what works for you.

Yeah - I'll ditto VP.  Win7 has a few cool features, but, they aren't worth the cost.  If you're not like me, and you don't enjoy installing stuff just to test it, don't bother with Win7.
