I am considering getting a Seagate Replica External HD has anyone had any experience with them.
Also how often is it necessary to reinstall an OS?

Maxtor/Seagate is a good company. However, I do not own the hardware that you are asking about.

As for reinstalling an OS, it depends on your usage patterns and, really, how much time and setup it would take to get the system "back to where it is now" with application re-installation, etc.

In the Windows 95/98 days, I reinstalled a lot.
Not as much for XP (every service pack release or so) and even less so for Vista (a year or so).

The older I get and the more work I do on a system (and cannot afford any downtime), the less I wish to deal with re-installation issues. :)
With that said, I always recommend to install an OS "clean", meaning to backup all files and data you cannot do without on an external device (CD/DVD/HD) and format the OS drive.

I once had an email from a reader that stated they upgraded their installed OS from 95, to 98 to ME and then to XP Home and was having issues... That calls for a re-installation if I ever heard of one. :)

In general I've had good luck with Seagate although I have some reservations lately.  Seagate bought Maxtor not that long ago and I've been waiting to see what happens as they begin to merge more of that technology under the Seagate name.  I've had a couple of drives fail on me this year (new drives that physically failed in less than a year) which, for me, is about a 10 percent failure rate.  That rate is unacceptable for me so I've switched to Western Digital for the time being.  This also comes on top of Seagate reducing their warranty period from 5 years down to 3 years.  That matches industry standards but it's hard to see those kind of moves as anything less than a lack of confidence in the longevity of their drives.  Then again, nobody else is offering any better anymore.

Like BV, the older I get the less I want to reinstall unless really necessary.  Instead I'm working to get myself more proficient at finding and fixing the problems that come naturually with using windows over time.  Sometimes the corruptions in files get so bad that you really don't have a choice.  But from XP on up these problems are getting less frequent.
