Shut down all services except those needed for internet?
« on: October 10, 2009, 03:27:55 AM »
First of all, let me say thank you for the great list explaining the Windows 7 services and their configuration. It is a great help tweaking Windows! However, I am not that familiar with Windows services and therefore need specific help:

I would like to disable all unneccessary services, except those needed for using WLAN/LAN for internet browsing (HTTP ports). Any other features, in particular those which need to synchronize with Microsoft or any other external website (calling home) and those who reduce performance I would like to switch off.

Sorry for adding another reply, but I wasn't able to edit my entry above:

What I am looking for is a list of services I can securely turn off without Windows itself and internet stopping to work. When I was using Vista, I was playing around with the services, used some pre-defined list (I think it was from a popular computer magazine) and suddenly found that I cannot get WLAN connections working anymore. I would like to turn off everything calling home, decreasing performance and being possible security leaks.

If someone could help with such list I would really appreciate that help!

Other important points to note:

3) Windows Services: I try real hard to recommend a service setting for "the masses." Microsoft is "more general" than I am in this regard. As such, this recommendation is labeled "Safe" throughout my web site. This does not mean that it will work for you. I cannot exactly determine "what you need" in each individual circumstance, but I can offer up the tools and information for you to determine that yourself. Knowledge is power, run with it.

Well, the best way is to manually shut down every service one by one ,restart ...
And write down what`s happening...

Than if you are happy with the outcome go to the registry export the confguration for the service you disabled ,put it on a notepad save it......and move on to the next service..(Assuming your OS does start afterwards :P and you have not been unlucky enough first time  to disable one of the vital services ) If your OS does restart breath deeply light up a ciggie have some coffe and pray to be as lucky secound time around.. ::) ;D

There`s only  143 services meaning 143 restarts  ;D 8) :o (Assuming all it work OK and you do not touch few of them that ARE REALLY VITAL..)

After a lot of work (tones of coffees and about 10 -20 packs of ciggies) you will be the happy possesor of a CUSTOM  .reg file that will enable YOU to close all of the services that YOU do not need  and your OS will probably  look somehting like that

Or you could  use BV`s "Safe" list and buy him a beer for the long hours he has put behind that list... 8) 8)

Cheers!

Yea every time I disable Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and reboot I lose Windows Audio Service as well. What are you doing to enable Windows Audio without Windows Audio Endpoint Builder?
