Student? This is the deal for you!
« on: October 03, 2009, 09:57:22 AM »
Here is what you do:
1. Make sure you have a valid email address with .edu
2. Make sure you have your student ID ready.
3. Call 1-877-696-7786
4. Tell them you want to purchase the full retail version of either Home Premium of Professional.

For an extra $5 you can purchase the disk otherwise it is a digital download.

Enjoy a full retail version of Windows 7 for only 30 bucks!

*I got two copies for my PC and my Laptop.  I paid the extra $5 and will have the actual disks shipped to me.  In case anyone was wondering, it is 1 DVD--both 32bit and 64bit are on it.

"Who" are you calling? MS or another company?

Did you already get them in the mail? RTM builds are separate, as in, both 32 and 64-bit versions cannot fit on the same DVD. They are marketed as the same (purchase Home premium for example and get both bit sets) but I think they are separate install media.

It is a phone number for the Microsoft Store:  http://store.microsoft.com/home.aspx

No.  The disks will be mailed on the 22nd.  If you elect to get the download, it will be available on the 22nd.

I can't confirm or deny this...I don't know.  All I do know for certain is that these are full installation versions of Windows 7; not upgrades, and both the 32bit and 64bit are on 1 DVD.

No problem.  I should also mention that it technically isn't just for students; the .edu email is the real deal breaker here.  Let me explain.

I called to get the deal for my wife who is a student.  While I was on the phone giving information, I asked the guy (in a joking way), "Hey, would you guys give this deal to a college professor?"  He asked if I had a school email that ended in .edu, and I told him I did.  He then said sure.  So I sprang for another copy.  Pretty sweet.

Also, do not confuse this deal with a similar deal from a Microsoft sub-contractor called Digitalriver.  While the price is the same: $29.99, the media is a only an upgrade disk or download.

Many companies offer greatly reduced prices for students and teachers. Macromedia (err, Adobe) comes immediately to mind. IIRC, their terms were a faxed copy of student ID or institution paystub for teachers.

This was actually a pretty stupid question on my part after I thought about what I was asking. :P
Glad ya didn't call me out on it. :)

Heh, heh.  I wouldn't do that...at least not to you.   ;D
