Windows Firewall vs. NPF

hello...

I used to run Norton Personal Firewall...& it had a function that would detect & disallow dangerous connections.

for example, it used to pop up from time to time w/ an 'Internet Access Control' window...during web surfing...advising me to block a high risk remote system which was attempting to access my machine. They were various Inbound TCP, UDP, IMCP & NetBIOS Services...utilizing any number of different ports.

So my question is...now that I'm running XP Pro...(& assuming my Windows Firewall is up & running)...does Windows Firewall have a function that accomplishes the same thing ???

I do not know as I do not have a Windows system directly connected to the internet with the software firewall running.
However, I will guess that is a "no" as far as I am aware in that it only warns of "outbound" connections attempting to be opened by applications... not inbound.
Someone with more experience with Windows firewall will probably chime in with the real answer, though. :)

Norton's firewall and/or internet security suite also has an Intrusion Prevention system which uses specific signatures to detect suspicious internet behavior.  As one would expect, Symantec's firewall and/or security suite is much more sophisticated and has many more features than the native Window's firewall which is basically just a software NAT router type of protection which monitors only inbound traffic. :)

IMO if your behind a router, software based firewalls aren't necessary. The only real benefit is inbound/outbound detection that will pop up a warning saying such and such is trying to access this or that. Some people like it and others don't.
