Hi, I am running Vista Home Premium SP2, and I recently made some hardware upgrades to my computer. After it was done, I was informed that I need to install software for my network adapter, and I was unable to go online.

I followed a Microsoft help topic here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826

One way or another, I ended up changing a bunch of my service settings information under the "Log On" tab, i.e., Local Service, Local System, or Network Service, in order to get all of the services running which I thought needed to be running.

I eventually installed the drivers for my network adapter, but now I still can't get on the internet but for a different reason. When I mouse over the network symbol on the toolbar with a red X over it, it says: "The account specified for this service is different than the account specified for other services running in the same process." aka Error 1709.

Using your website I was able to restore my services to their "default settings" but I am not sure if this restores their log on settings: Local Service, Local System, etc. I am still unable to connect to the internet on my main computer because of this.

Any advice on what I should do would be greatly appreciated!

I apologize, I should have posted this in the Vista Technical Support forum.

No, the default settings does not modify the actual account each service runs under.
You will need to change that manually based on the default account information on my site for the offending service.

BV EDIT: you can view the individual default service information located here:

Thanks.
I am not sure which is the offending service. I will just go through manually all services related to internet connectivity I suppose.

I just changed the following services to their defaults:

COM+ Event Manager from Local System to Local Service
Network Store Interface Service from Local System to Local Service
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service from Local System to Local Service
Remote Access Connection Manager from Local System to Local Service

I suspect the latter 3 are the reason I couldn't go online.

However, when I tried to restart SSTPS and its dependancy Remote Access Connection Manager, I get the Error 1052: The requested control is not valid for this service.

Does this mean I need to change them in Safe Mode? I will go ahead and restart just to see if anything worked.

Also, I changed them by typing NT Authority\Localservice and deleting the password fields. Is that password the administrator password that I use everytime I log onto my computer? In that case, I can just type it in.
