New Zone Alarm had to be removed
« on: August 31, 2009, 10:03:26 PM »
Downloaded latest Zone Alarm Pro 90_083_000 - installed OK but reboot resulted in everything coming to a screeching halt right after desktop/wallpaper/taskbar appeared. Waited for about 15 minutes and rest of programs in Startup did not start or show as started in Taskbar. Had to do hard reboot and tried again - same hangup.

Booted into Safe Mode > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled Zone Alarm. Rebooted just fine to desktop - reinstalled Zone Alarm Pro 80_400_020 and things working as previously.

Tried Zone Alarm forum - not available - to make report. Could be others had same problem and their site crashed?

Figured I'd report it here. (Do not know about other versions versions also released today.) :'(

I was never a fan of Zone Alarm, even when it first came out. Seemed to always bog down my computers boot time. Over the years I have tried different versions here and there and it really hasn't improved much. Since Checkpoint bought the software it seems to have become even more bloated and worthless. Truly a software firewall is not needed behind a NAT router. Some may block incoming malware or block it from going out but a descent antivirus/antispyware application should do that already. I personally don't use any protection at all, but I do have protection on the rest of the family's computers. Kaspersky was nice enough to butter me up with a couple NFR copies of their antivirus plus antispyware and I have been really happy with the performance of it. My wife, not to mention kids, click on everything and it has blocked all of it so far.

Am now running ZoneAlarm Pro 9.1.008.000 and it works just fine - as it has, for the most part, since I started using it years ago - on two systems.

I agree, IH8U.  Zone Alarm is worthless.  Bloated mess.  I guess for a casual user it might be adequate, but for a person serious about system performance, it is useless.

I have no issues with ZoneAlarm when it is used as an inbound/outbound/OS firewall but like every security
program out lately that also wants to sideline as your AV/Spyware/Phishing/Spam tool(s) of choice, and your
parents ie; the Parental Controls feature - of course they get bloated.

Just imagine how fat you would get trying to eat all that.

ZA despite the 'bloat' is a very good firewall.  In its default settings, ZA will stealth a computer that is running internet connection sharing (ICS).  Unlike some firewalls which can be exploited by local proxies, ZA detects local proxies and does not allow other programs to "tunnel out" through a local proxy.  ZA allows for advanced rules to fine-tune the packet and application level filtering.  In the hands of someone well versed in ZA, it can be a very effective security tool. :)
