Windows-Update Failure - BITS-service missing
« on: August 27, 2009, 08:58:16 AM »
Hello everybody,

when I was checking my OS (Vista home Premium 64bit) today, to see if recent updates are installed, I recocnised, that the auto-update had been inactive for about 4 months! Clicking on the "windows update" button resulted in the following error-code: 80246008.

Following the instructions in the corresponding windows-help article I saw that there is no BITS-service installed on my system. I spent basically the whole day trying to find a reason for this and I came to the conclusion that I might have been infected with a version of the conficker worm (several scans with av software did not show anything today) , which disables the auto-update function by deleting necessary services like the BITS service.

So my question is: Is there a way to manually install single services somehow (maybe from the vista DVD or can I get them somewhere in the web?) ? I spent hours searching the web but could not find anything concerning that issue.

Thanks for your help and sorry if the english sounds weird, I'm not really a native speaker ;)

Problem solved!

If had had only taken the time to really go through all your sections/articles about the services. Just after I posted the first post, I tried your tool http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/customREG_HomePre64.php and compared the "how it should be"-registry with my own. It turned out that I missed the "Start"-Entry. I don't really know much about what a service really is and where it is located, but simply adding the start-entry in the registry and rebooting solved the problem :)

Thanks so much for all the knowledge you provide here! And sorry for the now unneseccary post.

As long as you were helped, it is far from unnecessary. :)
