Windows Firewall (Vista SP2)
« on: August 26, 2009, 11:15:44 AM »
Hi

I am just curious as to what people think on this;

How good is Windows own Firewall as found in Vista SP2?

I have heard some say it is good enough (but that Windows defender is poo).

Would you recommend somebody stick with Windows Firewall but just get an anti-virus/anti-spyware to replace defender, or would you say don't trust Windows Firewall?

Thanks.  :)

I recommend a hardware solution. This is partly due to my idea that a system should not be trusted to protect itself.
Windows Firewall is better then nothing.

Thanks, BV.  I was just curious that's all.

I think word must be getting around the cats in my neighbourhood; they just keep wandering into my house.  I don't feed them or anything, but they just wander in.  Some will come up to me and ask to be stroked, others are a bit wary but come closer to me each time.  ;D

I don't mind.  I LOVE cats.  :D

This probably is not the answer you are looking for, but I recommend a separate hardware solution. Any software only solution is prone to problems and can be defeated if malware is successful in getting established on your system. A simple NAT router is a good economical solution as long as you don't use the DMZ feature. It is run on firmware, which is a static program loaded from non-volatile memory.

I'm usually working through a router but I've never minded the Vista firewall.  At home I'm using TrendMicro which will put in its own firewall in place of Vista's firewall.  I guess if you have an antivirus solution that you like and it provides a firewall, you might as well let it go.  Nothing is as good as just plain old common sense when surfing and downloading.

You are asking about Windows defender in a Windows Firewall thread... and I already answered that question for you, anyway:

Windows Firewall doesn't get updated unless it's a bugfix. Windows Firewall is not a definition based firewall.

What, you do not believe me? Thanks.
MS updates Windows Defender once per month by using Automatic Update.
I am getting tired of reading the same question over and over again in different threads, though. Then answering it, then seeing it posted... again and again...
