Mint Distro Review
« on: August 04, 2009, 03:37:39 PM »
Well I finally found a bit of time to download and install Mint onto my desktop PC at home.  In my opinion, there are some (mostly) pro's and con's with this distribution.

Pros

Installation was a breeze (much like Ubuntu).  Simply answer a few questions, and grab a beverage of your choice while it installs.

Drivers and updates were not a big deal, with the only limiting factor being your internet connection.

Depending on the version that you download, it comes "out of the box" configured to play mp3, mpeg, etc. type of files.  I'm personally on the fence when it comes to this.  I understand why other releases leave this out, but that's a whole other topic.

The menu is styled kind of cool, and I am slowly getting used to it.

Cons

First regarding the installation.  If you are new to Linux and plan on dual booting with your Windows installation, BE SURE that you know a little something about hard drive partitioning.  Sometimes the "default" settings that the installation program wants to use are not exactly what you want.  This isn't much of a "con" since many other Distro's are pretty much the same in that aspect.

This is another personal thing for me, but I do not like the "sudo" type of thing that is "built in".  At least it does ask for your password prior to doing anything that will affect the operating system, but I'm really geared more towards having a separate root password.

Setting a static ip address was a royal pain in the you-know-what.  I ended up having to dump the "Network Manager" and going with a different solution.

To sum it up, it's not a bad release at all.  The beauty of Linux is even though there are a few minor "cons", I have the freedom to change my system and get rid of the "cons".

I can agree with that, I dislike sudo as well. I've been using Mint 7 on my laptop for awhile now and I really like it. Haven't even bothered to boot into Windows on that machine since I put Mint on it.
