I have XP PRO SP2 or 3, don't remember  :-[ , but installed in a FAT32 partition so I have DOS 7 access to everything.  :) XP boots to Login screen however it is immediately covered with dialog box "Security Account Manager initialization failed because of a device attached to the system is not functioning. Error status 0xc0000001". Says to reboot to safe mode, which I can do, but safemode L.I. is also covered with same error message.  :'( I have deleted the 2 SAM's but system still comes back w/ same error and SAM's are replaced. I have not found a repair folder anywhere so dunno why SAM's return. I believe if I can disable the SamSs service,  the boot will be successful but I don't know the syntax for start, manual, auto, disable etc.  ???

Does anybody know and am I on the right track?  I have to work in DOS since the machine will not boot to windows.

An alternative might be edit the registry in DOS but I believe to do it XP is different than was in 95/98/2K. ???

Boot from the XP CD and do a repair install. IF the CD is early XP and you installed SP3 then you'll get an error message saying the repair can't continue because the OS on the computer is 'newer' that what's on the CD.

Then the only recource is to downlaod SP3 and slipstream it with the XP CD, create an ISO, and burn a new CD - now XP w/SP3 CD and try the repair install again.

The repair SAM should be in c:\windows\repair\ - copy this to c:\windows\system32\config\ and you should be back to running.  This is usually the beginnings of a system restore via the command prompt.  The main files involved here in the bootup are sam, default, system, security, and software.
