new driver causing error 28

I have a new computer preinstalled with Vista. My scanner is Canoscan 8000F .HP Compac
has a conflict with Canon.
Canon have produced a new driver (Scangear) but it will not load an gives an error 28. I referred it to Canon but all I got was the standard install procedure.
Grateful for any help.
