If you've followed his instructions and still no icon, you can always do a delete and reinstall.

I don't know why you can't see the Avast icon.

You could do as Volt tells you, uninstall the
program an do another install.

Are you running Windows Vista or Windows XP?

Volt...Thanks again for your help but rather than go through the uninstalling and re-installing process I think I'll just stay with what I have.  I have the Avast program, I just don't have the little Icon with the revolving A in it in my Systems Tray.

Glad I could help  :)

If you are real paranoid and want to see if Avast is running, you could do:

1: Press <alt><ctrl><Delete>
2: Select "Processes"
3: Look for names beginning with ash and asw
4: you should have 4-5 of them running

Edit:

You might have fallen into the old and neverending
"Missing System Tray Icons", but that is stuff
for another thread I think.

greetings and good luck

I think you should have tried something a little or a lot better than avast.
As I see it black viper site tries to help reduce system overheads as well as improved system performance.
You maybe should have asked for advice before purchasing (downloading) new software as there are lots of people to ask for advice and opinions (whether right or wrong).
I myself use NOD smart security which is all I need but if you where looking for anti-virus only I would have advise NOD32.
My opinions are of course that of my own and no one else's but NOD smart security by eset and NOD32 are the best when it comes to security and low system overhead.
Just google it and check out what other sites say and you will catch on !!

Open Avast and click on the up arrow on the upper left corner-click on settings then click on appearance and on the right side you should see the option to place icon in tray and also an option to animate it.

NOD32 may be a better anti-virus, but I refuse to pay for an anti-virus when I've been using free versions for years without any virus problems.

I agree, Volt.  Free anti-virus programs are good enough coupled with other security.  As a matter of fact, I used AVG Free Anti-virus for years.  Now, I too use NOD32.  The reason?  Well, not only is it, IMHO, the best anti-virus program, but it does in fact leave the smallest footprint on your resources.  I like to have as much of my computer's resources at my disposal as possible, and NOD32 helps me squeeze that last little bit.  Overkill?  Perhaps, but it's it's a personal preference; not a must.

You're right, though.  Free anti-virus programs offer great protection, and I'd recommend them to anyone...Avast included.

Best Regards,

Spawn

Good point about "footprint" Spawn. I made my comment as dejavu seems rather new to this and I didn't wan't him to be "scared" into spending $30-$60 a year when it's not needed.

Volt...You are sure right about me being new to this and I appreciate your help, suggestions, etc. I also believe as you do, that it is crazy to pay for programs when there are free ones that are just as good.

Have a Merry Christmas  ;D

I run lots of free software too, not because its free but because its the best to suit my needs.

there are a lot of people that need NOD32...and for the Granny that reads e-mail and is on the fixed income the free stuff is great.
