laptop-wireless switch

Totallaly new to laptops, when you are not connected to the internet are you supposed to turn the wireless switch off.
And if you are has this got something to do with battery power

I'd turn it off if you're not using the wireless and running off the battery....It will save battery power.

If your using XP or Vista, the power settings on the wireless properties will allow the computer system to shut the power down after a period of non use.
 
This has caused many to try to figure out why their wireless won't work.  Got to properties of the wireless network adapter in device manager and usually the last tab is power management.  The check mark on the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is default checked.  Uncheck it and it will always be on.
Checked will allow the computer to turn it off.
