Hey BV,

I have found your sight colors to be just fine and knowing the work my wife spends coding and adding content to her sights I would suggest the ols adage. IF IT AIN'T FIXED DON'T BREAK IT!!!

Take the easiest way out of this question.

Rick Martin

This subject came up again in a kind email sent directly to me by a reader asking me to rethink the Black layout.

I have adjusted my FAQ answer for modern browsers:
http://www.blackviper.com/AskBV/faqBV11.htm
and I would like to address three concerns outlined in that email:

1) Black is hard on the eyes.
Yes, I know. I have known this for a long time and, I must admit, long nights coding does strain my eyes. White text never really was invented to be on black background for a reason and a valid one. The crazy contrast is a bad thing. This is why I give everyone the option for all modern browser users, if you allow your browser to accept cookies and use JavaScript originating from www.blackviper.com, is to "Choose the look" located in the upper left hand corner of every page. If you choose not to excersize an option that I offer to you, then so be it... but the default is not going to be changing to white any time soon.

2) Copy and Paste.
Well, I am not thrilled with this issue brought up, but copying and pasting my text does not bring over any style sheet (CSS) information. Thus, if you copy and paste a chunk of my content (hopefully giving me credit when credit is due) that you could be putting it into notepad... black on white. So this is not really an issue at all. For the most part, you are "cutting and pasting the text" or the "HTML Markup" and not any color or style information associated with said text.

3) Printing.
All modern browsers that support CSS well (like the last 7 years or so) also support what it called an "alternative" style sheet directed to printing (media="print" vice media="screen" in this case). When a page is asked to be printed by the browser, it loads the special CSS that is designated for that page into memory and uses it to display a print preview (if that is how you are looking at it currently.) As such, regardless of the "color" of the web site, I can specifically target printers to not allow navigation links (the left side pane) and force color content... black on white. Thus, again, this is not a concern.

I am still looking for a solid/happy color scheme as "choice 3," but have not settled on one yet.

BV EDIT: I am seriously considering a color scheme based off of the C-64 boot up screen... for a long time now. (http://Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

Mr. Viper,
Your site has the most clear and concise info we (vista idiots ,also known as parents, who bought into the whole program and got lost and locked out along the way, were are looking for. The hits are low because older parents like me freaked by vista, are scared of your Black Viper (hacker sounding and black colors, which I find easier to read. I do not know the solution am just reflecting my response to it. My daughter's laptop is a big mess of all micro services and processes and tasks (encoded with letters, no descriptions, taking all my boot and online CPU). I will readjust to your recommendations and see how it goes. Thank you sir, for all your work and will send donation when I have income again! seriously, vistadrone1

Anyone and everyone can "change the color" of the web site... people just do not get this:
Upper left hand corner of every page... click the "white square". LOL?
"Hits are low?"... it does not sound like you read my web server logs... :)

BV EDIT: However, this does make me think twice about having the forums default to black color and only members would have the ability to change it.

I personally prefer a dark gray background. Way easier on my eyes.
I'm working with AutoCad all day, COLOR on BLACK (standard setup) is very tiring. I changed the background to dark gray and problem solved. A white background has the same effect, besides, you can't see the light colors very well, particularly yellow.

Hello Friends,
I just registered because I like a lot everything here
This is the only site,to my knowledge, where the administrator gives the public oportunity to choose!
I thank you for that Charles
I like to alternate and my favorite is  color blue
My vote is to keep the way it is

I like the way it is now its easy on the eye there is no "eye strain", that is not as much contrast as with black and white.

I made a minor modification to the color switcher in that it no longer is just "blank squares".
It now has a color border (call it a mini preview if you will) as well as text to help describe and assist my users in actually knowing what those buttons do. :)
This is, of course, on the main web site and not on the forums. :)

Although it's great to involve your patrons, I think you should stick with what you like.  It is your site after all.  Most people don't spend "hours at a time" on your site, so making it easier on your own eyes is probably more important.

I seriously doubt someone would stop coming to your site because of the color scheme in place currently. There are some color schemes that I think could pose a problem, but not the standard BV website color scheme.

What do you mean? I do not offer my black color scheme for download, but the general look information is available on the credits page:
