I think I may have found another issue with Firefox hanging on topics attempting to prefetch them. As a result, more connections are being held up then what is actually being used.
I need to fix this.
This issue is not fixed, exactly, but it is intended behavior with the forums to have semi-accurate "read" counter. Firefox hanging is fixed, though.

I made a couple of changes to the server.

1) "Keep Alive" requests are much longer. In the past, I only allowed them to be kept alive for 5 seconds. Now, it is 56. This reduces the overhead associated with creating a server connection and thus makes the site seem a tad faster.

2) The forums will not get all the much faster, though. Simplemachines.org is running quite a server to serve their content, of which I am not able to match. However, they are creating dynamic pages in .050 seconds while I do it in .200. Sure, it is over 4 to 5 times "slower," but with the data that I am pushing, no one will notice the difference of 150 milliseconds creation time.

Simplemachines.org's current server config: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=305094.0

Not much I can currently do to make things "faster," even though I wish I could. :)
If I could throw data to everyone instantly, I sure would. :)

What I have noticed is that the odd time the forum response is slow, it is not the main site that slows things down, but the image sites. I don't know if is feasible, but if you could store the avatars locally, it would speed up the response time tremendously. I notice on the Simple Machines site that most of them are stored locally, but there are still a few on foreign sites.

The reason I do not have avatars locally is due to outbound bandwidth and security considerations with uploading files to the server. I have considered this, but for right now, this is the best I can do.

Avatars for the index and topic views are now gone. Message view still has Avatars displayed, however.

You could always set something up that reduces the pic down to 40x40 res or so and a format of your chosing. I don't have an avatar  :-[   Don't care to use them myself though.

Whatever you have done ... WOW! Both the main page and the Forums came up just about instantly. Life is good  :D
