First Console: Atari 2600
« on: February 26, 2008, 08:47:17 AM »
My first console was the Atari 2600. In fact, I still have it. :)
The games that I have for it, all purchased at "the time of release", meaning, many moons ago, are here:

Anyone else have a 2600? Still?

That was my first console as well.  I had many games and usually got at the time of release.  Can't tell you how many joysticks I went through, all with the same problem.  Freakin trigger button.  Some of the really odd games are quite collectible as long as they are in the original boxes, like Miniature Golf, Flag Capture.

I had an Atari 2600, long gone now. Then I acquired an Atari 7800 and 5200 brand new in the box about 6 years ago. My dad had a friend that used to work for Atari and he didn't want them anymore. But those are long gone as well, burned up in a house fire, my house about 2 years ago. I had every Nintendo, Sega Master System, Genesis, Turbo Graphix 16, Sony PS1 and PS2. Currently I just own a PS2. Haven't bought Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Xbox, Xbox 360 or a PS3.

I now have a Wii. :)

Wow the Atari 2600. Black Ribbed Plastic, Faux Wood grain, and those brushed aluminum switches. I remember mine came with two controllers and two paddles. The game was combat. You could fight using tanks, jets, and I believe helicopters. I also got Pacman at the same time. Boy Pacman didnt look anything like he did in the arcade. LOL I must have collected 100's of games for that system. The worst ever was E.T. Never could figure out the point.

Those stupid controllers were a pain in the rear. I must have taken them apart a hundred times and cleaned them so they would work again for another couple months before they finally gave up. When I got my Sega Genesis I realized that the Sega Controllers plugged into the Atari and wouldnt you know it. They worked!!!

Im not sure what happened to mine but I think I sold it in a garage sale. Dont miss it and I wouldnt ever play it again but I do have most of my old games loaded into my computer.

I loved the 2600.  I don't have it anymore, but my favorites were Chopper Command, River Raid, Frostbite, and Cosmic??something.  They were great!  Frostbite was addictive as hell!

Missile command baby, I loved that game, never was any good at it though.

Yeah, I remember that Odyssey, now that was a real hoot. My GRANDFATHER and I played that in his front "game room" as he enjoyed callling it.
the rust colored sofa with the years of  years of pipe tobacco smoke and that unforgettable multi colored blanket my grandmother knitted for
one of her children and it somehow made it's way back home, lol.... The game we played was a spinoff of PacMan but I can not recall the name.
'Ol granddad kicked my butt many a time. I thought there was more than one game RB deuce, or was the Pac Man spin off the game?

I still have that Odyssey, still have the 2600 and the original box although it is quite tattered. The one I can not locate at my parents is the 5200. I never got into that one much. It was quite the game to have though, to be kool had to have that one for sure.

About two years ago for Christmas my son wanted that retro looking Atari that has ALL the games preloaded, which Santa gladly brought for him, when I dug out the real deal we really had some laughs. My son will be a teenager, the BIG 13 as he calls it on the 23rd. He is becoming quite the "geek" and despite my speeches on the importance of sports and following in dear old dad's footsteps he is addicted as I am to computers and video games, lol. Now that he is getting old enough to actually be competition we have really bonded a lot. we are Playstation buddies now, a LOT of Madden going on right now. He has not acquired the taste for the FPS games or role playing YET. e are working toward it though,  ;) Sometimes I feel kinds funny playing with him, maybe I should not be, or I dunno. Maybe there are OTHER things we should be doing but I tell you all one thing, computers, video games and the like of all the electronics in our home today provide more memories than any other thing I can think of. That is "priceless". We keep it monitored, no vegging for hours until the chores and homework etc. are done but then, ITS ON LIKE DONKEY KING BABY, and I am not too far behind him into out "game room". We snook (snuck, sneaked ???) the playstation into the den the other night, played Madden '08 football on the big plasma. That was too much fun and he beat me by a da$% field goal..... :)

You betcha!  I tell ya, Chopper Command and Frostbite were gold to me.  I could probably still play them both for hours if I had them.

Great story Boomer. These are the stories that those idiots in Washington need to hear. Its not all about Grand theft Auto. I wish my dad played some games with me. I guess he just missed out. Gaming got big for my generation. Thats why we have loads of older gamers. Big difference from the early days. Hey Boomer you mentioned there might be other things you and your son could be doing? Sure you could. But if your anything like me by now you have substituted vegging in front of the TV watching some lame corporate show with using your mind....strategizing, and working your hand eye coordination playing a game.

I got a 7800 Pro system.  Got it way way back think i was like 7 or 8, maybe younger.
Still works like a charm too.  Tons of games for both the 2600 and 7800 since it was backward compatible.
Think my favorites were Chopper Command, Tower Toppler, Dark Chambers and River Raid!!
Have tons of Joy Sticks and paddle control sets for it as well.

I Remember when I thought I had beat Dark Chambers..... I was at Level Z and was like YES!!!! Last stage!!!!
Than bam.... started all over with level B.... so i went through it again.... than it started with level C than i noticed the pattern lol

Them were the good days of gaming... ever lasting games where the only thing that mattered was getting that high score!

River Raid on the 2600 was a good one.
