It's real but somewhat over-hyped. Nobody seems to know what this thing will ultimately be used for. For now it is just another botnet being set up, and most botnets are used for distributing spam. But most networks in North America also block port 25 traffic from non-commercial IP addresses.  So what do they use those infected machines for? See:

As an aside to all this, I received an update to the "Windows Secrets" newsletter which discusses Conficker at length.

Note spelling.....is this thing "Conflicker" or "Conficker"?????

Anywho, here is the link for those interested.

Now go have a great day.

It is "Conficker".
As for "prevention"
1) Quit opening up email attachments!
2) Update your software and OS frequently... preferably "automatically"
3) Use a hardware firewall/router/gateway
4) Do not rely on your system to protect itself!

I have others, including my recommendation on browsers, but I will leave it as general as possible. :)

1) Quit opening up email attachments!

This is where online email services come in handy. I?m going to use Gmail in this example.

Some of the benefits of Gmail include:
?   Gmail scans both incoming and outgoing email attachments. See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=25760
?   Gmail has one of the best spam filters.
?   You get free pop3/imap access, so you can use your favorite email program to get your mail. Gmail will even tell you how to set it up.
?   Your email address will never change, even when you change ISPs and you can access your email anywhere you can get online, but not always recommend, especially on public computers.

You can also setup your antivirus program to scan your email when you receive it through your favorite email program for a second opinion. So there you have it, an easy way to help prevent getting infected through email.
