Service Questions
« on: March 17, 2009, 10:29:55 AM »
Hi,
I'm currently in the process of tweaking my XP Services thanks to the helpful guide provided by Black Viper. However I am stuck in a few areas and would appreciate some adivce if possible.

- ALG Service, I have XP SP3, and use Comodo as my firewall. Does this mean I can disable this service? Will this lower my defence to attacks if I disable this? I have it on Manual but it starts at every boot anyway?

- NLA, Network Connections - As above I have Comodo Firewall installed, so do I need these. They are again both on Manual but start at every boot. Do they provide added protection?

- Terminal Services - Is this just related to remote access, I never plan on allowing anybody to remotley control my P.C, as it is my home P.C can I therefore disable this? It's currently on manual but starts at every boot.

Thanks in advance if you can help me :)

OK as an update, I have disabled these without any noticable side-effects. I just want to check that i'm not comprimising my security in any-way by disabling these services?

Lastly in disbaling Network Connections I notice the icon dissapears. But I am still connected to the internet. Now let's say I wanted to connect to a different connection in range or change my WEP key, can I access these settings elsewhere or do I need to reactivate this service?

If you do not use the built in Windows Firewall, ALG can be disabled.
Network Connections service is required to "manage" network connections. Thus, you will need to start it to change connections. Whether or not this also applys to wireless connections, I have not tested.

Thanks for the reply, I have amended services as required.

Sometimes I like to just click Log Off Switch User when I leave the room so nobody can access my files while not at the P.C.
The problem with this is that it requires Fast User Switching Compatability on, which then requires Terminal Services to be on. The problem with that is I do not intend on using Remote Assistance whatsoever, or my P.C as a server so I don't really require this. Is ther any way to disable this and have the Log Off Switch User working?

Just log off and not "switch user" or hit the WindowsKey+L to "Lock This Computer".

BV EDIT: Gave advice for Vista and not XP... fixed. :P
