Getting SP2 onto a "Not Online" machine
« on: January 26, 2009, 09:27:07 AM »
Getting SP2 onto a "Not Online" machine                                                                        1.  My husband's computer (XP Home)is not connected to the internet.  Never was, never will be.
 2 . TurboTax 2008 requires SP2
 3. Is the SP2 exe file on my computer somewhere (updated in 2005?6?) such that I can transfer it to a CD and install it on his computer?
 4. Microsoft website has a download for "IT professionals installing on multiple machines - do not use for a single machine" "for a single machine, use Automatic Update".
      a. What will happen if I download the "multiple machine" version and install it on a single machine?
      b.  Can I get Automatic Update to download SP2 to a CD?

 Thanks for your help.
 Shari

You can use the Multiple Machines SP2 download and burn it to a CD, then apply it to the offline system. The "do not use for a single system" only reduces the amount of resources (bandwidth download) using Windows Update as it only applies "what you need for your version" and not download the complete standalone package.

In english, BV is saying, download Service Pack 2 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en. Then burn it to a CD and use that CD to install it on the offline computer. You could also download Service Pack 3 from Microsoft as well and install that too. Get Service Pack 3 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en.

Any time, I understand completely, I have the same problem myself from time to time.

Sounds like what I had assumed.  Good to have better opinions than mine, though.

The "do not use for a single system" only reduces the amount of resources (bandwidth download) using Windows Update as it only applies "what you need for your version" and not download the complete standalone package.
Is this the translation?: "The IT "multiple" version will work, but is a larger download than the Windows Update version".

I assume that upon accessing the CD via the standalone computer, instructions will appear which will be readily understood?

Thanks,
Shari

Yes, you are correct. They call it the IT version because it can be used on multiple machines, where as Windows Update only updates one machine and only downloads the needed files for that computer.

Yes, it is just like installing any other software.

Indulge me one last time, please.

Just received a response from Microsoft  (of course, encouraging me to install SP3)

"The Service Pack 2  that you are referring is only for IT professionals to install on network  computers. "

Other than pushing SP3, why would they want to make me think that I couldn't use the IT download?

Just curious.

By the way - you folks get the prize for fast and helpful answers, both now and in the past. Thanks for being there.

The short version! When you use Microsoft Update, it transmits the current status of your machine to the server and it only downloads what it considers necessary. When you download the full IT version, it has no idea what updates are currently on the machine to be updated, so it must download everything. Microsoft is just trying to save bandwidth by encouraging you to use the smaller Update.

The full IT versions are safe to use on your offline system.
