any clue if ESET Smart Security is working alright?
I am currently signed up with their Beta 4.0.  Would like to take it with me if I decide to upgrade :)

Sorry, I don't use Anti-virus solutions anymore.  Eset is top notch, though.  Just try it and see.

I installed AVG 8.0 and only had an issue with the update manager not being enabled. After manually selecting to "enable this task" for the updater, all is well.

I did have a strange occurrence with having both AVG and Defender on the computer for spyware. I pulled up the Action Center and initially there was a link to change what spyware programs were on or off. I clicked on it and it showed AVG on and Defender off for spyware. I thought that was really cool that Windows turned something of it's own off for a third party program. I left them as is and closed the Window and then got the message that they were both running and the link to change which is on or off is now gone.

ESET NOD32 v4 Service dependancy
« Reply #5 on: April 11, 2009, 03:13:55 AM »
Just wanted to let you know that when BFE - Base Filtering Engine service is disabled then NOD32 v4 install fails on 32bit machines. On 64 bit machines install may complete but running the program can cause unexpected BSOD-s.This actually applies to Vista as well but i posted it in here i case someone may think its a Windows 7 issue with NOD32 v4.

WORKED:
PC Tools Antivirus Free, Norton 360 v3 (beta only), PC Tools Threatfire, and Windows Live Security Essentials (beta)

DID NOT WORK:
PC Tools Internet Security (they claim that their beta, soon to be released, will work with it), Windows Live OneCare, and PC Tools Firewall Plus

This is from what I have experienced on Windows 7 RC1 Build 7100. Also, does anybody think there is something better to use than Windows Defender? I kinda don't like it... I use PC Tools Antivirus Free and Threatfire and Windows Defender...

This is a bit off topic, but I believe that VIPRE is the best. I have a UBUYEM edition, (my trial period ran out, but I was hooked) but have been informed that there is a free version. Also, periodically run Malwarebytes which is free and is the most often updated Anti-Malware software I have ever seen (so far the most updates I have seen was 3 in a 24 hour period) when they have an update, they don't wait, so always do a manual update before you use it.

I believe VIPRE is very good too, I've heard so many good things about it. If I had the money (not to mention a store nearby that sells it  :-\ )  I would definitely purchase it. And it's pretty cheap compared to all the other *bloated* protection solutions out there (it's like 40 dollars, isn't it??). So, in response, I was wondering if you knew another *free* solution...sorry to get so off topic here, I am considering maybe creating another thread....and I HAVE used Malwarebytes and it's excellent, but does not provide the real-time protection that I am looking for, without having to purchase it. Yes I am a cheap-o, but I have spent too much money on way too many different suites just trying to find one that suits my needs (i have about 5 different protection subscriptions, all running an average of 50 dollars a year...... :o  mostly because I have several computers...)

(not to mention a store nearby that sells it  (http://Smileys/default/undecided.gif) )

1). No stores involved, I just downloaded VIPRE directly from Sunbelt (the people who own it).

2). VIPRE costs $29.95 for the the first computer, then there is a $19.95 upgrade that covers all other computers you have. As I have multiple computers (i.e. more that two). I have the upgrade. It's sort of a home "site" license.[/]
So, you would only pay about $50 a year to cover all of your computers.

the real-time protection that I am looking for

3). VIPRE covers all of the bases you mentioned, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and real-time email protection.

This was also covered in the Trying to get rid of a virus for a friend thread -- http://bbs.blackviper.com/index.php/topic,1950.0.html[/]

BTW, if you insist on free, try Free AVG for Anti-Virus, and Spybot for Anti-Spyware. They do drag your system down (Especially Spybot) and they do NOT provide the protection of VIPRE supplemented by a periodic Malwarebytes (free) scan. But -- they are free, and they are pretty good. ----  :-\ I'd still at least run the periodic Malwarebytes scan, but then I'm paranoid.  :'( [/]
