Cannot Modify Windows Services
« on: January 01, 2009, 09:41:33 AM »
After reading the advice on this site I modified some of the Windows Services settings. After re-booting some strange things have occurred.

It takes an absolute age to restart, folders and programs do not minimze to the taskbar, image files do not open, it does not recognize printers or network connections.

When I open the Services folder, under the Extended tab no services are listed. On the Standard tab they are all listed, but cannot be modified (right click/properties nothing happens).

I have since downloaded the XP SP3 default services batch file and ran it, but are still having the same problems.

Any suggestions ?

Cheers

Did you apply the default settings as an administrator?
Did apply the settings in safe mode?
Did you apply the settings in a different hardware profile?
Are you logged in as an administrator when attempting to adjust/view the service settings?
In general, several of the symptoms you are experiencing does not have anything to do with services at all.
However, ensure that these are set to automatic and started as a good general base:

DCOM Server Process Launcher
DHCP Client
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Event Log
Plug and Play
Print Spooler
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Security Accounts Manager
Server
Windows Management Instrumentation
Workstation
