Getting error 403 only on this site
« on: December 23, 2008, 06:24:05 AM »
Blackviper, on my other PC (IBM-30 laptop) I get an error 403 when I try to go on this site. I am told only you can fix that. All other site are OK so far.
Thanks,
Joe50

Which site? What URL? What browser are you using? What modifications to the browser are you using? Download managers?

Windows Explorer 7
IE7 or Windows Explorer?
I just check in with IE7 and it works fine on my end. I checked the server logs and the only error it shows is a 403 for /index.php with no further data.
403 is also thrown up via ModSecurity on the server side for bad/strange/incorrect requests. Yours, however, do not look strange at all, but it does have IE7 and IE6 in the user agent string as well as several .net versions.
They could be causing a conflict.
When did this start happening?
Has it ever worked?
Did it start to have issues after around 7am today or broke for awhile?

You could try to delete your cookies, relog, refresh the page, and all could be fixed.

WOW!!! So, BV....I take it that for each visitor you have a log of what is taking place when they visit the site.

I never knew.  Guess I'm not as private as I thought.... ;D

Take care and have a very merry Christmas and a totally happy New Year.

Bill

Correct. For every single request for a file, meaning, each javascript, page, image, etc, the server logs IP address, time, file requested, transaction code and bytes transferred, page requesting file, user agent.
I may have missed something, but that is the biggest chunk of what I look at. Example is here with IP address replaced with xyz's. Nothing out of the ordinary, with the exception of "MS Internet Explorer" in there... that usually is not actually there.

xyz.xyz.xyz.xyz - - [22/Dec/2008:20:18:32 -0800] "GET /index.php HTTP/1.1" 403 211 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; MS Internet Explorer; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648)"

Another user agent string is this:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506; Media Center PC 5.0)

Notice, no "MS Internet Explorer" even though it is IE7... I would question that and why it is in there. Many bots state that exact line and... well, I ban (403) them. It reduces my bandwidth by tons... however, if this is a legit browser claiming that, I need to know to fix it.

Something funny happen on the way here. At home I am connected with the cable company and the error 403 dissapeared 2 day ago and started to work properly. I am now at my ski chalet and here I am connected with ADSL by Bell. I had the same problem (error 403) for 2 days here. NOW this morning I tried again and suddenly all is OK I can go to Blackviper without any problem. The more I work with this INTERNET the more I find that some problems are fixed by pure luck, without knowing how....
Hope the problem won't reappear.....
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL.

Back again with reeor 403,
I need to use my other laptop to get on this site. On my regular laptop I still get error 403 and on this site only. I get this error 403 on both of my service, with Bell ADSL and Cable ADSL.
What next....
I am really lost and I know for sure the problem is with my PC
as the problem does not happen with this PC.
Can anyone help.
Thanks

The 403 error is because the server does not like the request packet. I have run into this once before, and the problem was the MTU size. In my case, it was an IBM high security server that did not like packet size that a dial-up router was dishing out. Normally, ethernet will be set up to use a packet size of 1500, but the router in between cannot handle that size. So it splits it up into fragments and then joins the fragments at the other end. It's a shot in the dark, but it could be related to the route that your request is taking.

I made a couple changes to my firewall, but if it "works sometimes" and not others on the same system, usually, it is not on my end. If my server side security software dumps packets once due to it thinking it is an attack, it will drop all of them and not work sometimes, but will work at other times.
I am not dumping fragmented packets (that I know of), but the server is on a DSL connection with 1492 max MTU.
