Tuned up services ... computer won't boot *urgent*
« on: October 05, 2008, 02:57:07 PM »
 ???

Hey Guys,

I just used the latest "safe" service settings for tuning my Windows XP MCE 2005

My computer won't boot.  It won't go to "Last Known Good Configuration."  It won't boot into safe mode ... it just reboots.

This is bad.

Is there any way to restore my services on a computer that won't even boot?  The only thing I can think of is to "repair windows" from my WinXP CD

Please help!

Does Windows start to boot at all? If it boots at least for a minute or so, are you getting a countdown box stating that the computer is going to reboot?

Using the safe service settings, there aren't any services that are disabled that are required for Windows to boot. Did you, by chance, disable the Remote Procedure Call service? I'm not sure if there are any others, but this one is crucial for Windows to boot up. If that's that case, Black Viper has something that may help...http://www.blackviper.com/AskBV/2k4.htm

I can't even boot into safe mode.

I'm telling you, something is seriously f-ed here.

I tried to "repair" windows with the WXP MCE2005 disk, but even IT just reboots after it copies the files and attemps to repair.

I can't boot into windows, EVEN INTO THE RECOVERY CONSOLE!  It just "reboots" every time!

I'm about to use Ubuntu to get in there and move My Documents and everything from C to my backup drive and wipe it.

Can someone PLEASE help and keep me from doing this?

Ok, chances are, I disabled something VERY important.

I can't even boot into SAFE mode.

Is there any way to go back?

Windows Repair didn't work, Safe mode won't work ... any ideas?

I somehow managed to boot into the Recovery Console.

*whew*

I ran:
fixmbr
fixboot
chkdsk /p c:
chkdsk /r c:

... and am waiting for that to finish.

Are there any other things I can do to return my services / registry to normal from the Recovery Console?

AFAIK, SAFE mode still won't load (but will check after chkdsk finishes)

Sorry to post so many times on my OWN posting, but I'm learning as I go...

I'm following the steps on this website:

http://www.aitechsolutions.net/winxpnoboot.html

to try to find a solution to my problem.  It looks as if I might be able to restore my registry through the recovery console.

I'll post on my success ... or failure.  If anyone has any other insight, please let me know.  Thank you

The only service that would stop a system from booting is RPC, however, even if this service happened to become disabled in your normal bootup, it would not be disabled in safe mode as safe mode has totally different service settings.
The issue you are encountering has nothing to do with service settings or "safe" or anything else.
It sounds as though you are experiencing a hard drive failure/system crash/hardware issue unrelated to service settings.
