Multicore system, should I set core A to do task A ect?
« on: September 29, 2008, 09:06:17 PM »
Hi just a quick question. I have heard that setting a specific core to do a specific task ex "core one only runs vista, core 2 runs<insert program here>" ect that I would see a nice performance boost, compared to letting the system auto decide when to use whatever core, I have also heard that the boost is system dependent, and higher end systems see little to no benefit, so I figured I would post my specs here and see what the pros think  ???

Vista Ultimate 32bit
Intel Core2 processor Q6600(2.4Ghz 1066FSB) w/QuadCore Tech and      8MB cache
4GB DDR2 @ 800mhz
8800gt 512MB
500GB HD @ 7200 RPM

And I think thats all that really matters as far as performance, so anyone think this would benefit me at all? I use it mainly for gaming (Crysis ect) other than that just basic surfing the net and email. As of now it runs Crysis real well on very high settings, get that occasional lag spike on auto saves and when I get into a HUGE firefight with lots of "soon to be dead NME" but other than that its pretty smooth.

Let Windows decide.
Setting affinity on any processes is not worth it unless it is a very CPU/cache dependent application, such as video conversion and the like. Even then, you probably will not see any thing different, even slower, for applications that are multi-processor aware.
