Network DDE and Outlook/MsWord
« on: August 25, 2008, 01:29:07 PM »
Does anyone know if DDE service is necessary for using MS Word as the default email editor within Outlook? As I understand it, Dynamic Data Exchange provides data transport between the programs.

Reason being, My fathers computer would hang up at shutdown saying the DDE server was not responding. Disabling this service, obviously fixed this issue but now Outlook is stalling on some new emails or replies. He is pretty set in his ways (meaning he MUST use MsWord as the email editor) so I am trying to find a way through this problem. It's surely not critical I was just hoping someone might have some thoughts on this.

P.S. I cam across a hotfix from microsoft that seemed to address this issue but it had no effect. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892850

Thanks!

Milhouse

DDE is not used much any more. To the best of my knowledge, Network DDE is only used for Clipbooks, Microsoft Office, and MS Hearts over the network. I do not believe that it is used by MS Office on the local machine. If you are getting an error, I suspect that it is trying to access a DDE Share over the network. Try running ddeshare.exe.

Thanks J.A. I will be sure to try that when I get back to the office.
