Automatic Updates & Add or Remove Programs = DCOM error 10005
« on: August 02, 2008, 09:21:57 PM »
Regarding the manual approach to updating Windows XP SP2 via the Windows Update (WU) web site [refer to: http://bbs.blackviper.com/index.php/topic,1059.0.html], versus the Automatic approach, which includes setting the Automatic Updates (AU) service to Automatic (started) and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to Manual (not started)...

Today, I discovered a relationship between opening Add or Remove Programs and the following "DCOM error" message that gets logged in the Event Viewer under the System section:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
Date: 8/2/2008
Time: 10:15:58 PM
User: Pawluk
Computer: Pawluk
Description: DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service wuauserv with arguments "" in order to run the server: {E60687F7-01A1-40AA-86AC-DB1CBF673334}

When AU is set to Disabled and I click to open Add or Remove Programs the above "DCOM error" is logged to the Event Viewer

However, when AU is set to Manual and I click to open Add or Remove Programs the above "DCOM error" does not appear.

I suppose there may be something wrong with my operating system and that's why I get this error.  However, I prefer to believe that the relationship between AU and Add or Remove Programs that generates this "DCOM error" is just another Microsoft system irregularity.

For those whom also prefer the manual approach to WU, have you experienced this "DCOM error" relationship with Add or Remove Programs?

Regards,

Yes, I have.  I just tested it out and it's the same on my system.  I have been searching everywhere for an answer to why I have been getting that error message.  Thanks.

Btw, I am also getting an error in my wbemcore.log "GetUserDefaultLCID failed, restorting to system verion" [sic].  I haven't been able to find a good reason for that one either.  Any clue as to what that's about?

wbemcore.log is part of WMI:

FWIW, I had a chance to revisit the issue recently and came across some answers here:
