starts & stops, mouse & keyboard freeze
« on: July 24, 2008, 09:44:31 AM »
On my one year old HP Pavilion 3023 (1/3 size stack), within minutes after logging in on windows vista the mouse and keyboard will freeze, no input apparently. The motherboard was replaced about 6 months ago under warranty. Had a heckava time getting to the mouse section in control panel but it said the mouse is operating properly. Using a wireless mouse, tried a wired (both PS2 types), same deal. Then tried the USB wireless I got to use with the laptop I got (that I'm using now), seemed to work for a short while then same stoppages occurred.

The mouse pointer will move for about 1-2 seconds, sometimes less, then freeze for 15 seconds or more before allowing movement again, only to freeze within seconds.

When this acted up enough to bother me I went to full recovery right away using factory recovery disks I got during the motherboard problem. THAT acted up for a while but finally worked this morning. Windows does allow me to start up in SAFE mode and that works fine with the original mouse. I did put fresh batteries in the original mouse. ANY clues on how to proceed? I have to check my papers, I think it's out of one year warranty. It was last selling for $450 so HP repair pricing or going via a store like Staples would cost the same as a new PC!

Hit control+alt+del and under the processes section, see what, if any, process could be taking up CPU resources and causing the delays.

How well does a wired mouse and keyboard work on the system?

Have you checked for updated drivers for the mouse and keyboard?  Vista is extremely picky when it comes to that.  If your mouse and keyboard are not "Certified for Windows Vista" with updated drivers, they will cause problems.  Even if it is "Works with Windows Vista" I have seen problems.
